They had a Dream

Topic: What does the writer do in the opening passages of the book to persuade you to continue reading the book? In the introduction the author starts the book off talking about his personal experience. In which he tells a story of seeing the blacks in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1941 step off the curb and into the gutter in order to let whites pass, from his discussion of this he shows you that this was something he wasn't used to seeing living in New York City. He also talks about his conversation of the account with a black and once again another response that he wasn't used to. This type of narration in the beginning show you that prior to these incidents he had no knowledge that these things were going on, because of his slightly naive nature in the beginning and his array of historical facts on the lives of the four men that fought these struggles, I became interested with his way of portraying the story and this persuaded me to continue reading the book

  1. 2/3/10--4/4 entries--remember to post twice a week and to develop your entries to 250-350 words per entry. These two requirements enable you to practice your skills at being an alert reader and help you to work on developing your thoughts more (the 10-12-sentence body paragraphs will flow more easily in the timed essays).

Great book choice! I saw in the paper earlier this week a local woman, 97, who has been a civil rights activist all her life says that she lives on so that she can communicate the history to young people. I'm so glad that you are reading up on this history!
